What Is an adjustable bed?

What Is an adjustable bed?

If you’re shopping for a new mattress, chances are you’ve started to see adjustable beds popping up underneath them. Seeing a bed in motion might bring back memories of late-night infomercials, but adjustable beds have come a long way since they started as hospital beds in the 60s. So what are modern adjustable beds, and what can they do for you?

What are adjustable beds?

Adjustable bed, adjustable base, power bed, motion base, electric bed – you might see a lot of different terms for the same thing. The idea started in hospitals as a way to help patients get in and out of bed and rest more comfortably. Within a few decades, these moveable beds spread to home health use. As more studies showed the benefits of better sleep positions, adjustable beds began to be produced for the average consumer.

At its most basic, an adjustable bed is a base for your mattress (you don’t need to use a box spring with it) that uses motors to move it into different positions. The base has one or more joints to allow for different sections to adjust to the angle you like best. Depending on the model, you may be able to raise the bed up and down, adjust the head and foot positions, and more. These beds-in-motion provide the user with the ability to customize their position to get a better sleep experience. Power bases come with either a wireless or attached remote to change positions and activate its other features.

What other features, you might ask?

Well, we’ll tell you. While modern adjustable beds are still associated with health benefits (more on that in a second), they’re also about lifestyle. With people doing more things than ever in bed, whether it’s using a laptop, scrolling endlessly through your phone, or binge-watching your latest favorite show, an adjustable base can prop you up at just the right angle. And, let’s be honest, changing positions can be pretty fun in certain scenarios. Like we said – there’s a lot you do in bed, and a lot that an adjustable bed can support. Oh, did we mention that some models provide even more relaxing options? Power beds nowadays have luxury features like massage, under-bed lighting, and A/C power outlets so you won’t have to struggle trying to charge your phone or laptop in a wall outlet.

And what about those health benefits?

Adjustable beds started out as a way to help people heal up, and they still offer a lot of ways to improve your health through better sleep. It seems like a new study comes out every day telling us about the importance of good sleep. There are a lot of factors that can help you get better rest, but finding the right sleep position can help with all sorts of different issues. Adjustable beds can help reduce snoring, acid reflux, and congestion by raising the head. They can also improve blood flow, take pressure off your back, and just generally reduce aches and pains.

Chances are, if you can adjust your position to what your body needs to be comfortable, you’ll sleep better overall. That means waking up refreshed and ready to take on the day.

How easy is it to use an adjustable base at home?

Modern adjustable beds are made to be easy to use at home. You probably want to use a surge protector to plug in the bed, and have enough space in your bedroom to for the base move around. Most are designed to fit inside headboard/footboard/rail systems so you don’t have to give up your favorite bed. And they now come in a variety of styles and colors that blend with any décor.

One important consideration is the mattress you’ll use. Most mattresses produced today will be compatible with an adjustable bed base, although certain materials and thicknesses will work better than others. Memory foam, latex, and compressed coil work the best. Metal coils or springs may not work - if a mattress has a border wire around it that's sign it won't work with an adjustable bed. Check with the store or manufacturer to see if the mattress you want will work with a motion bed.

For setup, if you purchase an adjustable bed from a mattress store, you can usually get delivery and installation included. Even without that option, most adjustable beds require little more than attaching the legs and plugging it in. Then put batteries in your remote and you’re ready to relax!
