4 Bedroom Decorating Myths to Stop Believing Right Now

Decorating sounds like the easiest thing in the world, even if you’ve never done it before. You’ve heard tips your whole life, so it should be simple to pick out paint and get to work. Not exactly. Everyone has their own opinion, but there are some things floating around out there that are just flat-out myths. Here are four decorating “facts” that you can ignore.


If you’re a person who enjoys sleeping in or spending hours relaxing under the covers, purchasing a bed you love should be high on your list of priorities. However, not all beds are the same, and not all of them will suit you, so you need to be careful when making the decision.

Defining the perfect size for your bed depends on your preferences and your space. To find out what the right ration of bedroom to bed size is, listen to the experts. The general recommendation is that the bed should take up about a third of the entire space in your bedroom. That doesn’t mean you have to stay small if you have a small room! In fact, filling a room with more small furniture makes it look smaller than if you chose just a few larger pieces. In the end, it’s all about you, though, so don’t be afraid to purchase a bed you like the most, regardless of its size.


This outdated concept used to be quite popular back in the 1960s and 1970s when people used  just one color for their walls, rugs, bedding, and furniture. Unless you’re into the retro look, you can feel free to use a range of colors and styles. If you’re an expert, you can make anything work. If not, it’s safest to pick your main color first, and select accent colors that compliment it. As far as style, there are plenty of examples out there where mixing styles looks fabulous. In the end, whatever makes you happy and comfortable is best!

If you don’t know what cladding is, it’s a layer of material that goes over a wall to give it insulation or a little extra decorating appeal. Stone, brick, wood, aluminum – it comes in many shapes and options! Cladding can be used on the outside, or the inside. Many experts say that layering over your interior walls decreases your space, or that if you put anything up, it should be the real thing. But why limit yourself? Cladding can give a drafty room a little extra insulation, and it’s an easy way to apply a warm wood or elegant stone look.

Although it seems like an easy project, installing these on your own can be more frustrating than fun. Check out local businesses who can do the work for you to make sure your new bedroom is perfect.


Yes, our bedroom is where we sleep and relax, so soothing colors often help with that. But  studies have shown that we sleep better the darker our space is. Sleeping with lights on has even been linked to depression. Choosing a dark paint color could help create a better snoozing space (and fit your personal style).

Most people think white is the choice to make a room look bigger, but the visual scale of a room has more to do with what you put in it. Even the ceiling doesn’t have to be white – so get creative!

That doesn’t mean you should ignore the light, though. Closing your blinds during the day could actually harm your health, preventing tons of fresh air and natural sunlight (and therefore oxygen and vitamin D) from coming into your bedroom. This is particularly important if you have a baby because they need to learn the concepts of night and day, and keeping them in the dark all the time is not the way to do that.

Some of the other bedroom decorating myths you need to be aware of include insisting on a matching set of sheets, all the same furniture, or being boring – the bottom line is that your space can be whatever works best to keep you relaxed and getting better sleep.
